Streamline redline markups for better collaboration

Overview

Technical drawings help owner operators and engineers visualise how projects should be executed. They provide detailed specifications in standardised language, making it easy for project stakeholders to cross reference for future modifications or maintenance. Here at Draga, we offer a smart alternative to the traditional redline markup that gives project stakeholders a clear overview of technical drawings and detailed, actionable plans to follow.

The challenge

Oil and Gas companies and many others in the heavy industry still rely on hand-drawn technical drawings for data visualisation and equipment identification. In a complex engineering and maintenance project, these drawings often go through several revisions before they finally advance to the next steps.

Typically, owner operators merge hundreds of technical drawings together to form a single source of truth. They highlight any changes or errors in redlined drawings. Rushing this process means that you could risk working on an incorrect version of your technical drawing, yet manually reviewing every single technical drawing is inefficient.

Companies need a streamlined solution for their long and exhaustive process of forming redline markups without compromising on accuracy or efficiency.

What is a redline markup?

Redline markups, named for the practice of annotating in red ink, refer to technical drawings marked to indicate errors, corrections, or changes in an engineering or maintenance project. Engineers look at redline markups to review the changes in the original drawings to make sure that they are practical and safe to execute.

Redline markups mitigate mistakes made during operations, while also encouraging effective communication between project stakeholders.

How our redline markup optimisation process worked?

Our teams in Thailand and Norway worked in concert to help our clients optimise the redline markup process.

We integrated the native files (redline drawings of Instrumentation, Electro, and Process) into our internal system. To resolve ambiguities that come with the manual process of redlining drawings, we redrafted with the help of tools like Microstation, Autocad, and Microsoft Visio.

The results

Completed 4.5k redline drawings

Ensured that redline drawings were correctly updated for better collaboration

Redrafted 525 technical drawings

Improved the qualities of engineering drawings to lower the possibilities of operational errors

Streamlined redline markups

Drove greater efficiency with enhanced communication

By updating the redline drawings, project stakeholders can now more conveniently locate, replace, and repair equipment. This saves engineers and owner operators from going through the trouble of finding the most recent information updates.
